Recent research (2019) has investigated the overall effectiveness of hypnosis as a treatment for anxiety, as well as how it fits alongside other psychological approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy and Mindfulness. Overall, the research and evidence demonstrates that hypnosis is a highly effective treatment for anxiety.
The Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy as a Treatment For Anxiety
Hi it’s Dan here. I hope you’re good today and today I just wanted to say a few words about the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety. I know from my personal experience how much hypnotherapy helped me to overcome the anxiety that I used to struggle with. I’ve helped many, many people using hypnotherapy to overcome their anxiety and, if you want some inspiring stories about overcoming anxiety, do take a look at the written testimonials, the videos over there on my website and some really, inspiring, brilliant results there that changed people’s lives as they shifted from being anxious and stuff and moved on and done the things they wanted to do and continue to do so.
And we’ve all had research for a long time that shows that hypnotherapy and hypnosis can really help with areas of overcoming anxiety. Yet up until now, the research has tended to look at specific areas. All the evidence, all the research, there’s a lot of good stuff out there showing how hypnotherapy can help, they’ve tended to look at specific areas, like I say, like exam anxiety, performance anxiety, medical anxiety, general anxiety and a lot of positive evidence and research science out there about the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in treating those things.
What we haven’t had up until now is someone to carry out analysis and look at the overall effectiveness of hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety. Well, great news, great news, now we do have that, a brilliant kind of wealth of knowledge and information brought together in a meta- analysis of all those kind of previous research papers that looked at the overall effectiveness of hypnosis in the treatment of anxiety.
And great news as well, they found that hypnotherapy is a really effective intervention in the treatment of anxiety. So, the research shows that hypnosis really is a highly effective intervention for treating anxiety. And I think it’s something like the average participant in hypnotherapy is looking at somewhere around 79% reduction in their symptoms after treatment and that even increases a bit with follow-up further on down the line.
What they also found, again, which is very valuable stuff in terms of the treatment of anxiety, hypnotherapy is really up there in its effectiveness with things like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other forms of treatment. Hypnotherapy really sits quite comfortably in terms of its effectiveness up there and they also suggest, from their findings, that hypnotherapy may even be more effective than things like mindfulness, which is currently quite popular in terms of treating anxiety.
And they also found, through their research, that combining hypnosis with other forms of therapy like CBT tends to lead to greater results, which is really kind of no surprise. We’ve had research for a long time that shows that, if you add hypnosis to CBT, it tends to lead to better outcomes. So no surprise that they should find that here as well.
And that’s really where something like cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, the kind of stuff I do when I help people, that’s where it comes into its own, because you have that whole wealth, that whole breadth of strategies, techniques, the approach, things you can call upon that help you if you are struggling with anxiety at the moment. So I just wanted to share that with you, I think it’s brilliant news. It really adds to the research, the knowledge, the evidence base for hypnotherapy but also for the treatment of anxiety, and really shows that, when it comes to treating anxiety, hypnosis really should be up there on your list of options, because it has such a wealth, such a positive impact and can help you in so many ways.
