Gratitude, Anxiety and Self-Esteem

Hello it’s Dan here. It’s a beautiful February afternoon. I’m just taking some time to get out here alongside the waterside, having a look at some nature walking along. And I think on a day like today it’s very easy to be grateful for the sun in the sky, being able to get outside, being grateful for having places to go, these natural places.

And really today I just want to say a few words about gratitude, because we know from research that being grateful, expressing that gratitude towards others, appreciation, thank-you for stuff that you do, and just for stuff in our lives, it’s good for our well-being, for our mental health, it’s good for our self-esteem and it tends to help us combat anxiety and depression as well.

So, all in all, expressing gratitude deliberately in our lives is a really positive thing. We can do that in a number of ways, we can just be grateful for the things around us, some people write lists, you can write down all the things that your grateful for, the people, the places, the things you’ve done, the things you can do, the fact that you can walk and breathe and eat, you’ve got a roof over your head, all those kind of things.

Certainly, writing those things down and contemplating those things is really good for mental health which, like I say, is good for combating anxiety and depression. It’s good for self-esteem, good for your well-being, for life satisfaction. There are so many positives from it. You can just obviously take everyday life into your behaviours. If someone holds a door for you, if someone does a little act of kindness, passes you something, if someone does something like that, say thank-you, appreciate those little moments and you’re the one who will get the boost, they may well get a boost too from you expressing that gratitude because who doesn’t feel better when you feel appreciated. But all the research shows that it’s the person who gives the gratitude, who expresses that thank-you for that appreciation, is the person who gets all the benefits. So, why wouldn’t you go out there and say thank-you to people.

I’m often surprised at how few people do it. If I stand to one side, or hold a door, or walk in the roadside so someone can carry on along the pavement, I’m often surprised how few people actually say thank-you and recognise those little moments. And, to be fair, those people who look the most miserable can mostly benefit from expressing gratitude more in their lives for all those positive reasons I’ve mentioned.

And the research also shows that deliberately contemplating these things, just taking a few moments each day to think about the people in your life who made a difference to you, positive experiences of things that are in your life, that kind of gratitude contemplation has massive impacts in terms of well-being and life satisfaction, and mental health, and self-esteem, and all that good stuff and means we tend to be more resilient for challenges that come our way, and also tend to be a lot kinder to ourselves, and support ourselves more, which obviously fits in with a lot of good mental health stuff.

So, I’m going to take some time now to enjoy walking around this nature, I’ve never actually been down this path before, I don’t know where it goes. Exciting adventure for me and I would really suggest taking some time to express that gratitude in a way that’s right for you and your behaviours.

Write these things down, write notes to people, let people know that you appreciate them, and take some time to contemplate these things as well. You’ll reap the rewards of doing so, your mental health, your well-being, combating anxiety and so on, and self-esteem, and I think you’ll really find that you feel a lot better in yourself. So, I’m going to leave you with that and I’ll speak to you soon. You enjoy the rest of your day now.
