Comparing Yourself to Others Hypnotherapy in Ely
Now one thing I come across quite a lot in working with people, particularly if they’re anxious, so they feel low or their self-esteem isn’t where they want it to be, is to go online and to see all the happy, the positive stuff, all the good bits that other people are posting and then to do a sort of negative comparison with their own life and how they’re feeling and how they’re getting on and to then think they’re not good enough, they’re not worthy, there’s something wrong with them and their life’s problematic.
Everyone else has got it better and to really just amplify negative thoughts and feelings by carrying out that comparison. Yea,h always keep in mind something you know already, that people are only posting the bits that they want you to know about. They’re posting the good bits. They’re not posting everything about their life and so you want to avoid that tendency to just assume that they’ve got everything sorted and you haven’t so you’re not good enough as a result. And remember they’re posting the good bits.
They will still have challenges, worries, anxiety, stress, is the same as all of us. And how do we know that? We know that because they’re human and experiencing challenges and worries, anxiety, stresses, having these things to deal with. It’s something we all encounter at different times in different ways and different levels.
So keep in mind that they’ll be experiencing that stuff too because they’re human. Because you’re human. If you’ve got struggles and challenges at the moment it’s because you’re human so be at peace with that and avoid that temptation to carry out that negative comparison where you take what’s on the surface, and what they choose to show you, and you compare it with the whole of yourself.
You see what they’ve put on the outside, happy stuff, positive stuff, good stuff and then you compare it with the totality of your life including all the kind of stuff, anxieties and worries, going on inside of yourself. And avoiding that kind of false comparison where you just make yourself feel worse.
So whether it’s in conversation, whether it’s there on social media particularly, where it is very problematic and keep in mind they’ve got challenges as well. They’re only human, you’re human. Be at peace with that if you’re experiencing anxiety or worry. You’ve just learned some unhelpful thinking patterns, some unhelpful patterns of feeling and dealing with things. They can all be changed, they can all be sorted, you can get yourself feeling better.
But really do keep that awareness, avoid that temptation to just do that kind of sloppy, negative comparison where you take what they show you and what’s on the outside and all their good bits and you compare it with your bits that aren’t where you want it to be and you just find yourself feeling worse. Keep that in mind, challenge any tendency to do that. And you know, if you feel comfortable in the fact they’re human, you’re human, they’ll have challenges, you’ll have challenges.
And if you are struggling, taking action to sort those thoughts and feelings to get yourself feeling better and and to move on with life in a way that will please you without just adding and contributing and amplifying the kind of unhelpful stuff that you may have been experiencing.
So really do keep that awareness of how these things affect you and avoid that tendency to carry out that kind of negative comparison that just makes you feel worse. Keep that in mind when you’re online today
