Since the pandemic I think we’ve all got a lot more used to interacting online for a much wider range of purposes than we ever used to. Working from home, lockdowns, home schooling and so on accelerated our willingness to communicate over things like Zoom and Teams. 

That said, even before the that I’d helped a lot of people across the world using Zoom and Skype. I often get enquiries from people who live abroad or too far away from Ely and Newmarket to attend in person, yet who still want to engage in hypnotherapy sessions with me for issues such as anxiety, worry and overcoming phobias. During the pandemic all of my work had to switch to online hypnotherapy due to restrictions, and even hypnotherapy sessions with people who were local to Ely and Newmarket continued online. Working in this manner has only continued where someone lives several hours away around the UK, or abroad, or where someone may struggle to travel or need to avoid being around others for various reasons (e.g. they are immuno-compromised or need to avoid any possible infection for medical reasons).

In my experience, online hypnotherapy sessions can work smoothly and successfully. Yet, when someone does contact me about working over Zoom, that question of whether online sessions are as effective as in person sessions, usually looms large in their minds.

Wow! What a week that was! As well as donating blood, working with some fantastic clients, receiving a whole load of awesome reviews and managing to complete a fourteen mile run as part of my ultra marathon training, I also attended the SME Ely Business Awards ceremony at The Maltings, here in Ely.

It was an absolutely fantastic evening spent alongside the best of businesses in the Ely area. And I’m delighted to let you know that I was the Silver Winner of the Service Excellence at the awards! I’m absolutely delighted with this as the standard of businesses short listed in this category was exceptional. A huge thank you to you for your ongoing support and encouragement that allows me to keep on helping so many people with issues such as anxiety and low self-esteem.  

The Service Excellence award is all about giving outstanding assistance and advice to people who use my products and services so I’m delighted with that. Of course, testimonials and reviews form a large part of that so thanks again to everyone who continues to submit such positive reviews about their hypnotherapy sessions!

 I often work with women during pregnancy, through childbirth and then throughout the adjustment to parenthood stages.  They may be struggling with anxiety, worry and a sense of overwhelm. There can be anxiety and fear about health, about being in hospital and coping with the birthing process, and about how well they think they will cope with having the responsibility of a new born to look after. There is no doubt that there are a lot of demands, challenges and things to learn through pregnancy and into parenthood (as well as a lot of love, happiness and joy, of course!!).

Pregnancy related anxiety can lead to fear, worry and dread about any and all of the specific issues, demands, challenges, events and changes that surround each stage of pregnancy and child-birth. There can be issues around health (your own and the baby’s), hospital visits and the process of childbirth. There may also be social, relationship or financial issues, concerns about fulfilling the role of parent and about your physical appearance and the impact upon your body and the physical changes from pregnancy.

There is growing evidence about the symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced by many women during pregnancy, alongside growing evidence that these psychological symptoms contribute to the pain experienced during the delivery process. 

Hypnosis can help you with managing and reducing your fear, anxiety, with pain management, and with strengthening your sense of confidence. Alongside the existing supportive literature, a systematic review has now reviewed current protocols involving the use of hypnosis during the perinatal period and examined the effects of hypnosis on mothers’ well-being.

Changing habits can often feel tough and like some sort of difficult challenge to achieve. Your existing patterns of behaviour, thinking and reacting may seem so long standing and ingrained that they seem immovable.

Yet we are all able of learning, adapting and making changes to what we currently do.

However, often we try to change too much too soon and struggle to maintain it. Or, making the changes you want to achieve may seem too overwhelming and so you procrastinate and delay and don’t make the progress you would like. Even if you get going with changing habits you may find that in no time at all your motivation and willpower has faded over time and with the busyness of life, and you are back where you started, doing what you’ve always done.

So if you want to start making consistent, progressive change and to build up some positive momentum in changing habits and behaviours then you need to tackle it step by step.

Do you have a tendency to be self-critical in your thinking? 

Whether it’s a component and linked to anxiety, low confidence, low self esteem, depression or just struggling to cope with things, being self-critical is often there contributing and exacerbating how bad you feel. You may generally be negative towards yourself, who you and what you do. Or you may find that when faced with an adversity or challenge, you go back to putting yourself down, blaming yourself and believing that you are at the cause of all of your struggles.  

Being self critical can contribute to all sorts of mental health problems, as well as being a generally uncomfortable and unpleasant way to go around living inside of your own head. You can put yourself down, be harsh towards yourself, blame yourself and talk yourself out of doing things that you want to do. 

Yet you may find that your thinking and mindset is very different towards those you are close to. It may be that you encourage and believe in loved ones, considering them to be capable and wanting the best for them.

And if a stranger walked up to that loved one and starting putting them down, telling them they weren’t good enough and they were a waste of space, would you just idly stand by and let that happen? Or would you tell them to do one and then reassure your close other that those things were nonsense? And if you wouldn’t let a stranger be critical towards a loved one, why on earth would you put up with being that negative and critical to yourself in your own head all of the time?

So many people set massive personal goals and then struggle to make, and maintain, progress. They seek to revolutionise their life overnight when, in reality, keeping the same big, motivating goals and evolving towards them can reap more consistent and enduring rewards.

Now I don’t know about you but every Christmas I love to watch and read A Christmas Carol. I love everything about the story, structure, period and message of the story.  I’m sure I don’t need to revisit the well known story in any detail as we all know that Scrooge was visited by three spirits who help him reflect, review and change his life (although in case it comes up in a quiz remember he was actually visited by four ghosts in total!).

And it’s the sort of structure, that of reflecting upon the past, reviewing the present and planning for the future, that you can use to benefit you own mental health and well-being.
