Do you have a Fear of Public Speaking?

Do you have a Fear of Public Speaking? Hypnotherapy in Ely and Newmarket
The fear of public speaking is said to be one of the biggest fears that affects people – in fact, many people will do all they can to avoid ever being in a situation where they need to give a speech, deliver a presentation or speak in front of others.
When I work with people who have a fear of public speaking the sort of things that concern them are:
- Worry about forgetting what you are talking about or going blank
- Worry about freezing up or forgetting what you are saying
- Worry about looking stupid, being boring or people judging you negatively
- Worry that everyone else knows more than you do
- Worry about stuttering, shaking or being obviously anxious
- Worry about things going so badly you let your friends/partner/boss/colleagues down (and in so doing ruining your relationships/career/life)
Quick Summary
- Fear of public speaking is extremely common.
- Most fears are linked to fear of judgement, making mistakes and looking nervous.
- Anxiety often exaggerates how noticeable nervousness is.
- Public speaking confidence can be developed.
- Hypnotherapy may help reduce anxiety and increase confidence.

Public Speaking Worry
What most people do is something like this:
- Get asked to give a presentation or speech
- Start worrying about one or more of the things listed above and then make pictures in their heads about everything that could go wrong, while feeling that worry inside and telling themselves what a disaster it’s going to be
- Spend all their time mentally rehearsing things going badly (increasing the worry factor the nearer the time gets)
- Go in there feeling worried and put into practice the worries
Now a little bit of adrenaline on the day can be useful to get us pumped up to deliver with energy and focus. However, we need to be able to balance it with calmness, clear thinking and confidence.
Why Public Speaking Creates So Much Anxiety
One of the biggest misconceptions about public speaking anxiety is that it means you can’t speak confidently or communicate well.
In reality, most people with a fear of public speaking have no difficulty holding conversations with friends, family, colleagues or people they feel comfortable around. The anxiety tends to appear in situations where they feel they are being evaluated, judged or put under pressure.
When speaking in front of a group, many people suddenly become much more aware of themselves. They start monitoring what they are saying, how they sound, what they are doing with their hands and whether they look nervous. Their attention shifts away from communicating naturally and onto analysing themselves.
At the same time, the imagination often starts generating worst-case scenarios. You may picture yourself forgetting what to say, freezing, making mistakes, being judged negatively or looking obviously anxious. The more vividly you imagine these outcomes, the more real they begin to feel.
Psychology research suggests there are several common thinking patterns involved. One is known as the spotlight effect, where we overestimate how much attention other people are paying to us. Another is called the illusion of transparency, where we assume our anxiety is much more visible to other people than it really is.
Fear of judgement can also play a major role. Many people worry that if they make a mistake, others will think badly of them. Yet research consistently suggests that people tend to overestimate how negatively others judge their mistakes and shortcomings.
All of this can create a cycle where fear of looking anxious makes you feel more anxious, which then seems to confirm your fears.
The good news is that these patterns can be changed. As anxiety reduces and confidence grows, many people discover that public speaking becomes far easier than they ever expected.
Overcoming Public Speaking Fear
I recently worked with someone who had a fear of public speaking and who had agreed to be a best man at his friends’ wedding. Just the thought of the speech would make him anxious – even when it was still over a month away. He was worried about letting his friend down, freezing on the spot and looking nervous and uncomfortable all the way through it.
Using hypnotherapy, we were able to remove that fear and anxiety so he could perform on the day with confidence and calmness. As he put it:
“I went to Dan with a fear of public speaking, and a best man speech looming on the horizon. After several sessions, including general therapy, hypnosis and NLP, and using some simple but useful techniques Dan showed me, I was able to calm my nerves and managed to perform on the day. I also have a generally more positive outlook and increased confidence in day to day things” DG, Ely

- presentations at work
- speaking in meetings

Often they already know their subject well. The difficulty is not a lack of knowledge or ability. Instead, anxiety, fear of judgement and overthinking make it difficult to access those abilities under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fear of Public Speaking
Why am I so scared of public speaking?
Public speaking often triggers fear of judgement, embarrassment, making mistakes or looking nervous in front of other people. For many people, the anxiety is driven more by what they imagine might happen than by the speaking itself.
Is fear of public speaking common?
Very much so. Public speaking is often cited as one of the most common fears people experience. Many people feel anxious before presentations, speeches, meetings, interviews or speaking in front of groups.
Can people tell I’m nervous when speaking?
Usually much less than you think. Research suggests people often overestimate how noticeable their anxiety is to others. Even when you feel very nervous internally, it often appears far less obvious externally.
What if I forget what I want to say?
Many people worry about going blank or losing their train of thought. In reality, occasional pauses, checking notes or collecting your thoughts are completely normal and rarely judged negatively by audiences.
Why do I overthink presentations afterwards?
People with anxiety often replay situations in their minds and focus on perceived mistakes or imperfections. Unfortunately, this can make small issues seem much bigger than they actually were.
Does public speaking anxiety affect confidence?
Very often. Repeated worry and avoidance can gradually reduce confidence. As anxiety begins to settle, many people find their confidence naturally starts to improve as well.
Can hypnotherapy help public speaking confidence?
Many people find hypnotherapy helps reduce fear of judgement, overthinking, self-doubt and anxiety while increasing calmness, confidence and self-belief when speaking in front of others.
