Workplace Anxiety – Hypnotherapy in Ely and Newmarket
If you struggle with workplace anxiety, it can start to dominate all of your waking hours. We all spend so much time at work, often with the same old pattern of tasks, situations, people and environments.
If there is something, or someone, at work that causes your anxiety levels to rise then it can become a real problem. You find yourself thinking ahead and feeling stressed in the morning as you get ready. On your commute you notice that the worst case scenarios and uncomfortable feelings grow and grow. And at work you can feel totally stressed, worried and anxious in a way that makes you feel bad and stops you getting on with the things you need to do. You may then worry about not doing your job very well and getting in trouble over it.
With workplace anxiety, your evening can be filled with a sense of relief that you’ve made it through another day yet tinged with the dread that the next day will be another exhausting internal battle. You may find yourself thinking and talking about work issues all of the time and struggling to sleep each night as you worry about the next day and play out things in your mind. And, of course, many people need help to overcome their fear of public speaking such as workplace presentations and meetings.
Recently I was was working with someone who would wake in the night thinking about work, would be unable to eat from stress in the morning and then struggled to get out of the car and go into the office. Now, she’s happily getting on with things, rather than putting them off, and feeling happier and more herself again.
There was also a client who had anxiety when seeing, or even thinking about, a particular colleague. The mention of their name, the sound of their voice or an email from them popping up would all cause workplace anxiety. Thankfully, it is very possible to change your response and interactions with someone at work to something more calm, composed and confident.
Anxiety At Work
We all get the occasional moments of anxiety and stress at work, just as we all do in other aspects of life from time to time.
Yet, sometimes it becomes an ongoing pattern of dread, anxiety and discomfort. It can be mentally and physically exhausting to try and deal with all of your own thoughts and feelings. You work hard not to show others how you feel and you struggle to get your work done. It may seem like a ceaseless cycle of anxiety each and every day. Or, it may come and go depending on what you need to be doing or how you need to be doing it with.
For example, some people struggle when deadlines approach, especially if these are a bit unrealistic and your manager is unsympathetic. You know you need to keep your job (at least until you find something else) and so you suffer with anxiety and work longer and longer hours to get done what needs to be done. I covered a bit more about anxiety at work in this article: Anxiety At Work – Hypnotherapy Ely and Newmarket
Like all forms of anxiety, workplace anxiety is something that it is very possible to tackle successfully.
Anxiety becomes a self perpetuating cycle. You think ahead and dread what is coming up. Your mind fills with all sorts of worst case scenarios and catastrophic outcomes. You feel tense and on edge just imagining it. You go into work and feel all the uncomfortable anxious feelings as the negative thoughts continue to dominate your mind. And then afterwards you think back on all the negatives and stresses as you tell yourself how you can’t handle, deal and cope with it. You feel trapped. You start to feel anxious about the likelihood of feeling anxious.
And then the cycle begins all over again. No wonder you feel down and stuck. You feel controlled by your anxiety with no relief in sight.
However, with cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, you can successfully break that pattern. You can feel more calm, confident an in control before and after work. And when dealing with things at work you develop the confidence and sense of capability to know you can handle it. Like a self-assured knowledge that whatever happens, you’ll be okay.
Given how many hours or each day, week, month and year you spend at work, it really is a shame if you feel rubbish when you are there. It’s even worse if you then let workplace anxiety thoughts and feelings spread into the rest of your life, depriving you of joy even when not at work.
