Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – Hypnotherapy in Ely and Newmarket

Do you struggle with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? If you battle with IBS then the stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation can have a hugely disruptive and debilitating impact on your life.

It may stop you going out and doing the things that you want to do because of the pain and discomfort. Or you may worry and get stressed in case those IBS symptoms strike.

Whilst the exact cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is currently unknown, it is widely considered that stress, anxiety and other intense emotions contribute.

And so it makes sense to see what you can do to ease that stress and anxiety to do all that you can to ease the IBS symptoms.

IBS Symptoms and Treatment

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common digestive disorders and symptoms can include bloating, stomach pain, discomfort, cramping, constipation and diarrhoea.

Whilst over activity in the gut is considered a factor, it is only considered that a person’s emotional state can impact on problems in the gut. Anxiety and stress may be from any area of life or about the IBS symptoms or even about the possibility of IBS impacting on things you have planned. Some people with IBS may avoid or withdraw from social or business events where they worry that the IBS may strike.

If you suffer with irritable bowel syndrome, the you should always consult your doctor for advice and support on how to manage your symptoms.

Hypnotherapy for IBS is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a possible treatment for IBS.

Reducing Anxiety and Stress To Help IBS

To reduce the anxiety and stress around IBS, which can help reduce the frequency and severity of IBS symptoms, put these steps into action:

1)  7/11 Breathing – simple yet effective, 7/11 breathing will help you to quickly relax. Breathe in for a slow mental count of 7 and out for a slow mental count of 11. Then repeat regularly to ease stress and anxiety. Make sure that your out breathe is longer to stimulate your natural relaxation response.

2) Get Walking – aim to get out for a 10-15 minute walk every day. Getting active will give any stress or anxiety an outlet and you will feel more relaxed afterwards.

3) Stop The Thought Train – instead of letting stressful thoughts and worries take over your mind like a runaway train, shut them down as quickly as possible. If the thought is unhelpful or makes you feel unnecessarily bad then say ‘stop’ loudly in your mind and push that unwanted thought away. Recognise it as a stressful or anxious thought and tell yourself something useful like ‘Right now I am safe/ok’ or some other thought that makes you feel better when you think it.

4) Do Things You Enjoy – there is a natural tendency for all of us to cut back on the things we enjoy when we feel stressed and anxious. Maybe we just don’t feel like it or feel like we haven’t got time for it. Yet the more we cut back and stop doing the things that lift our mood, the worse we feel and the harder it gets to deal with everything else. You have to take care of yourself and your own well-being before you can help others and you have to have some enjoyment, fulfilment and fun if you want to deal with life’s challenges.

5) Learn To Relax Effectively – so many people tell me that they just can’t relax. They are on the go from the moment they wake until they try to sleep. And many other people physically relax yet keep their minds going on overdrive by staring at a screen for hours on end. So relaxing mentally as well as physically is going to help you think clearer and feel better. I recommend getting my free Rapid Relaxation download and finding about twenty minutes each day to recharge those mental batteries.

Whilst there is no ‘cure’ for IBS, reducing stress can mean that the impact is reduced. So implement these 5 steps to ease any general stress and anxiety as well as curtailing any unwanted thoughts about the Irritable Bowel Syndrome itself.
