Hypnotherapy for Sleep and Sleep Disturbance – Hypnotherapy in Ely and Newmarket
There can be few more frustrating, debilitating and exhausting challenges than long term sleep issues and ongoing sleep disturbance.
You can start to dread your bedtime routine, feel anxious just thinking about whether you will be able to sleep or not and then lie awake stressed for hours through the night. You start to wonder how you’ll cope through the day and your ongoing stress, frustration and inability to sleep makes you feel physically and mentally drained and worn out. You’ve probably tried all the things you can think of to break the pattern and improve your sleep, only to find that nothing really helps.
Some people I have helped had just grown resigned to living with sleep disturbance and just expected to have to lie there at night, spending hours thinking, worrying or just looking at their phone. Others dread and feel anxious about sleep and then feel worse and worse as the evening draws closer.
Sleep problems can start to become habitual and enduring. It causes anxiety, stress and frustration. And, it can lead to all sorts of negative thoughts and feelings that can spread into each and every aspect of what you do.
Sleep disturbance can negatively affect your physical and psychological health, however, hypnotherapy can be very effective for helping you with improving your sleep.

Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be very effective in helping you with improving your sleep and addressing the issues that are keeping you awake at night.
A systematic review has now been published which comprehensively identifies the research and evidence regarding hypnotherapy for sleep disturbances. And as Wofford, Snyder, Corlett and Elkins (2023) point out, sleep disturbance is associated with impairments in cognition, emotion regulation, immune function, and physical health. Many available treatments are limited and medication can be problematic as it can lead to addiction and side effects.
As well as it’s potential in helping with sleep issues, hypnotherapy has also been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions and symptoms that can affect sleep, such as anxiety, hot flashes, pain, and stress. Hypnotherapy can therefore target sleep disturbance by working on it specifically, or by alleviating conditions that may be negatively impacting upon sleep.
For example, with people I help, daytime anxiety and stress can often create sleep problems, which then leads to more day time anxiety and ever deteriorating sleep quantity and quality. Sometimes, long after the anxiety and stress issues that first created your sleep problems have passed, your sleep issues may still be frustratingly continuing and so this can be targeted too.
This systematic review found that, in summary, hypnotherapy appears to be a promising treatment for sleep disturbance that may lead to improvements in both subjective and objective measures of sleep, with few potential adverse impacts of the treatment.
Many of the studies reviewed in the study reported positive findings for the effects of hypnotherapy on sleep outcomes. And hypnosis has been found to have beneficial effects on a wide range of sleep variables, including sleep quantity, insomnia symptom severity, time taken to fall asleep and quantity of awakenings.
All of which is fantastic, robust evidence that supports the use of hypnotherapy if you are struggling with your sleep right now. Certainly when I work with people on sleep issues they start to end the dread about their struggle with sleep, they start to relax in bed at night and calmly drift into a deep sleep. Their thoughts and anxiety about sleep come to an end and even if they wake in the night, they are able to get back to sleep more easily. Sleep becomes a relaxing, positive experience and an opportunity to enjoy an improved quantity and quality of sleep that leaves you refreshed in the morning and ready for a productive day ahead.
