Can Anyone Be Hypnotised? Hypnotherapy Ely and Newmarket
Can anyone be hypnotised? During a free consultation that I have with someone before they start hypnotherapy, this is one of the most common questions that I get. After all, if you are going to enjoy the positive results of hypnotherapy, you want to know that you can be hypnotised so that you benefit form your sessions.
And I think that this idea, that only some people are ‘susceptible’ to hypnosis, comes mainly from stage shows and film depictions of hypnosis. In these, people seem to slump with their eyes closed into some altered state of consciousness that they later have no recollection about. They then do whatever they are told to do, which is often fantastical. The first thing I say to clients is to dismiss anything they’ve seen or heard from these environments out of their mind.
We are all suggestible to some degree. You stop at a red light, you do what your manager tells you, you hear your phone beep and you pick it up to take a look. In every interaction, conversation and relationship we all have cues and suggestions that we respond to. With hypnosis, you are just learning how to suggest certain things around your own thoughts and feelings to yourself in beneficial ways. You are taking back control over the things that go on inside of your own mind.
When you come to see me there is some aspect of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you are currently struggling with. Whether it is anxiety, stress, panic attacks, lack of confidence, eating habits or smoking, you don’t feel in control over that part of your life. Hypnotherapy helps you to master your own inner dialogue, imagination, motivations, expectations, emotions and behaviours so that you move forward feeling better and better equipped to successfully tackle the trials and tribulations that life will throw at you and so that you can progress with positivity towards being the best version of you.
Hypnosis and Your Mindset
And so the answer to can anyone be hypnotised is a resounding yes, they can. Hypnosis is about orchestrating your own mindset rather than having your mind habitually control you. Now, some people are better than others initially at adopting the positive mindset needed for results, yet everyone gets better at it through repetition and practice. Being hypnotised is a skill that you get better at, rather than being something you either inherently can or can’t do. This is good news because whatever your starting point things get better and better. The results you get become better too.
We need to keep in mind that hypnosis is a natural state of mind and, with hypnotherapy, you are just deliberately creating this mindset for a purpose. You still know where you are, what you are doing and what is going on around you. You can utilise your normal psychological processes to create beneficial and long lasting positive changes in your life.
Some people worry that during hypnosis they will be controlled in some way. In fact, the opposite is true, Right now your unwanted thoughts, feelings and behaviours are controlling you and limiting you. If they weren’t, you would simply decide to stop them and change them. Hypnotherapy helps you to take back control over what you are doing and how you are doing it. Rather than continuing to do the same old thing in the same old way, you get to direct your life and choose what goes on inside of your own head. And, with practice, you can get better and better at doing things in ways that bring you more and more positive results.
There’s a bit more about this in this hypnotherapy information video. Have a watch here:

The Hypnotic Mindset – Are You Really in Control?
Hypnosis allows you to take control over the kind of things going on inside your mind. You get to be active and engaged in purposefully managing your own thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions. Hypnosis is a process that you actively participate in rather than being a passive thing done to you. That is why anyone can be hypnotised.
Whilst we do many things non-consciously, habitually and seemingly automatically, our minds work on pattern and repetition. In most cases, you will find yourselves thinking, feeling and doing things in a way that you did in a previous, similar situation. With hypnotherapy, you can change that pattern and create new ways of thinking, feeling and doing things that help you better in that situation.
With hypnosis, you adopt a positive mindset, build upon your motivation to change and grow your confidence in your ability to make changes. Whatever your starting point, you become better and better at orchestrating your mindset, beliefs, thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions. You are utilising the same psychological processes that you use in each and every part of your life and changing unwanted patterns and habits into something more helpful, empowering and beneficial. There is no need for some magic ingredient to benefit from hypnosis, and it means that everyone is capable of benefiting from hypnotherapy.
Someone who has anxiety and imagines vivid future worst-case scenarios, can learn to employ that imagination in more helpful ways. A person with low confidence and self-esteem can be helped to stop the negative self-talk and self-criticism. A weight loss client can develop the motivation and control over eating habits that enables them to lose weight and feel healthier and happier.
So can anyone be hypnotised? In short, yes. Whatever you have been struggling with, you will be using aspects of thoughts, feeling and behaviour in certain ways that repeat and become seemingly automatic through that repetition. The same psychological processes can be used to interrupt those habits of thought and behaviour, and to establish more beneficial ways of doing things that bring you the positive results that you are looking for.
