Could You Use More Confidence?

Could You Use More Confidence? Hypnotherapy in Ely & Newmarket
Earlier in the month, I went to a conference in Cambridge where Michael Heppell (author of several books including ‘How To Be Brilliant’) spoke. If you ever get a chance to see Michael speak then I’d highly recommend you go.
At the conference Michael asked the audience:
‘How many of you could use more confidence?
Is there anybody here who can honestly say that they have all the confidence they need in every area of their life?’
Nobody’s hand went up.
In fact, Michael has asked that question to over half a million people over the last thirteen years and has yet to have anyone answer yes.
Quick Summary
Most people feel they could use more confidence in at least one area of life.
In this article you’ll discover:
- why even confident people sometimes lack confidence
- what confidence really is
- the fears that often sit underneath low confidence
- why confidence problems are often linked to anxiety
- how confidence can begin to grow naturally
Many people assume confidence is something you either have or you don’t. In reality, confidence is often a skill that develops as anxiety, fear and self-doubt begin to reduce.

So What Stops Us Feeling More Confident?
One of the reasons I like Michael’s question so much is that it highlights something important.
Confidence is rarely an all-or-nothing thing.
Someone may feel confident at work but struggle socially.
Someone else may feel comfortable socially but lack confidence when speaking in meetings, giving presentations or trying something new.
Most people have at least one area of life where confidence could be stronger.
The question is not whether confidence is possible.
The question is what is getting in the way.
Overcoming Fear
When I work with clients to help them improve their confidence it usually comes down to FEAR:
- Fear of failure
- Fear of what others will say/think
- Fear of being judged
- Fear of not succeeding
- Fear of succeeding
- And any other fears
Michael has a very apt definition of what fear really is:
False Evidence Appearing Real
Looking back, many of the things I worried about when my confidence was low either never happened or turned out to be far less important than I imagined.
Once you start to remove the limiting beliefs and fears that hold you back, you can start to take action to move towards how you would like your life to be now. How good would that feel?
One Thing I Learned From Social Anxiety
When I struggled with social anxiety and low confidence, I used to believe confident people were somehow different from me.
I assumed they didn’t feel nervous, self-conscious or uncertain.
Over time I realised something important.
Most people experience those feelings at times.
The difference is often how they respond to them.
Confidence is not the absence of fear.
Confidence is often the willingness to keep moving forward despite uncertainty.
Many people who appear confident still experience doubts and worries. They have simply stopped treating those thoughts and feelings as proof that they cannot cope.
Frequently Asked Questions About Confidence
Can confidence be learned?
Yes. Confidence is often built through experience, learning and changing the way you respond to fear, uncertainty and self-doubt.
Why do I lack confidence?
Many confidence problems are linked to anxiety, fear of judgement, negative past experiences or harsh self-criticism rather than a lack of ability.
What is the difference between confidence and self-esteem?
Confidence is often about trusting yourself in specific situations. Self-esteem relates more broadly to how you feel about yourself as a person.
Can anxiety affect confidence?
Very often. Anxiety can make it harder to trust yourself, think clearly and feel comfortable around other people. As anxiety reduces, confidence often begins to improve naturally. This is one of the most common things I see in practice. Many people think they have a confidence problem when anxiety is actually the thing undermining their confidence.
Can hypnotherapy help confidence?
Many people find hypnotherapy helps reduce fear, anxiety and self-doubt while increasing confidence, self-belief and emotional resilience.
