Why Do Some Thoughts Stick In Your Mind?

Why Do Some Thoughts Stick in Your Mind More Than Others?
Have you ever wondered why some thoughts get stuck in your head?
You have hundreds of thoughts every day. Most of these thoughts pass through your mind quickly.
They don’t bother you too much and you probably don’t even notice the majority of them.
But every so often, a thought appears that feels different.
It might feel:
- more important
- more uncomfortable
- harder to ignore
And instead of passing, it seems to stay.
These are often thoughts that create an emotional response, such as anxiety, These thoughts can seem to get stuck in your head.
If a thought feels like it has ‘stuck’, it’s usually not about the thought itself, it’s about how your mind has responded to it.
Why Thoughts Get Stuck In Your Head
Many people notice certain thoughts seem to get stuck in their mind, especially during periods of anxiety or stress.
If a thought feels like it has ‘stuck’, it’s usually not about the thought itself.
It’s about how your mind has responded to it.
When a thought feels:
- unusual
- uncertain
- emotionally charged
…the brain treats it as something that needs attention.
You start to give the thought time, focus, energy and belief. The more you engage with it, the stronger your anxious response – and the more problematic it feels.
The Attention Effect
The more attention a thought receives, the stronger it can become.
This can look like:
- going over it repeatedly
- trying to understand it
- checking what it means
- trying to resolve it
For example, you might notice a thought and then keep returning to it, trying to work out what it means, even when you would rather move on.
Sometimes you know the thought is irrational and it becomes frustrating that it affects you so much. Other times you may feel you need to think about, understand, analyse and engage with the thoughts in your head.
Even though this is meant to help, it often has the opposite effect.
Why Some Thoughts Stand Out More
Certain thoughts are more likely to ‘stick’ because they:
- feel important
- create uncertainty
- go against how you normally think
- trigger a physical reaction
This makes the brain treat them differently from everyday thoughts. Thoughts like this are far more common than most people realise.
These thoughts can make you feel anxious. Your mind can then race through many other potential worst cases and catastrophic thoughts. And the more anxious you feel, the more your brain seeks to find the threat causing it.
The Thinking Loop
A common pattern looks like this:
- A thought appears
- It feels significant
- You try to work it out
- This increases attention
- The thought returns
This is what keeps the experience going.
Why Trying to Get Rid of It Doesn’t Work
Trying to:
- push the thought away
- replace it
- force yourself not to think about it
can actually increase how often it appears and how much you overthink.
Trying to get rid of the thought can signal to the brain that it’s important, which keeps it active.
Sometimes the content of the thought can vary. Yet the pattern remains the same.
A More Helpful Approach
What tends to help is not getting rid of the thought…
…but changing your response to it.
1️⃣ Noticing Without Engaging
Instead of analysing the thought:
- notice it
- allow it
- let it pass
Recognise that you can think a thought, and notice it, without needing to engage or respond.
2️⃣ Reducing the Need to Solve It
Not every thought needs to be worked out.
Letting go of the need for certainty reduces the cycle.
You have thousands of thoughts every day. You can create, imagine and think about all sorts of things. It’s just a thought and only becomes important if you treat it as important.
3️⃣ Stepping Back From the Pattern
The less attention the thought receives, the less it is reinforced over time.
Because the thought is in your head, you can do whatever you like with it. You can interrupt, change, extend, dispute, challenge it and more.
Thoughts don’t become powerful on their own.
They become powerful through attention.
And that means the pattern can be changed.
4️⃣ Understanding Anxiety
This is closely linked to anxiety patterns.
When you learn how to feel calm, you undermine the power of your thoughts.
You can read more about this on my anxiety hub page.
Why thoughts get stuck in your head can also link with overthinking, intrusive thoughts and OCD patterns.
A Local Perspective
I recently wrote about this in my Ely Standard column, as it’s something that comes up very often in my work.
You can read the article here:
Ely therapist on why some people overthink certain things
It also appeared in the Hunts Post, Cambs Times, Wisbech Standard and Peterborough Matters.
If You’d Like Support
In my work as an anxiety therapist in Ely, I often see how certain thoughts can begin to feel more powerful simply because of how much attention they receive.
When that pattern shifts, the thoughts become much easier to move on from. If certain thoughts have been difficult to switch off, it’s important to know that this is something that can change.
If anxiety, overthinking or intrusive thoughts are affecting how you feel day-to-day, support is available.
A free initial consultation is there simply to talk things through and see what might help, without pressure or expectation.
