The Biggest Misunderstandings About Anxiety

If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety, you’ve probably been given plenty of advice. Some of it is helpful, but some of it is based on misunderstandings about anxiety that can actually make it feel even more frightening and difficult to manage.

One thing I’ve noticed after working with hundreds of people with anxiety over the years is that many people aren’t just battling anxiety itself, they’re battling what they believe anxiety means. They worry they’re losing control of their thoughts, that the physical symptoms mean something is seriously wrong, or that their anxiety will never get better.

When those misunderstandings about anxiety begin to change, anxiety often starts to lose much of its power. It becomes much easier to recognise what is actually happening so that you can make positive changes towards feeling better.

That doesn’t mean anxiety disappears overnight, but understanding what’s really happening often becomes the foundation for lasting change. Many people tell me that simply making sense of their anxiety leaves them feeling calmer and more hopeful.

Quick Summary

In this article you’ll discover:

  • why anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness
  • why anxious thoughts aren’t always facts
  • why physical symptoms can feel so convincing
  • why avoidance keeps anxiety going
  • why recovery doesn’t mean never feeling anxious again

One of the biggest turning points is realising that anxiety often becomes much less frightening once you understand what it’s really trying to do.

This article accompanies Episode 5 of the Dan Regan Hypnotherapy Podcast, brought to you in association with Spotted in Ely. In this episode, I explore five of the biggest misunderstandings about anxiety and explain why seeing anxiety differently can often be the first step towards recovery.

The Biggest Misunderstandings About Anxiety

Here are five of the biggest misunderstandings about anxiety that I come across in my hypnotherapy work in Ely:

Misunderstanding 1: Anxiety Means You’re Weak

Although our understanding of anxiety has improved enormously over the years, I still occasionally hear comments suggesting that anxiety is simply a case of ‘pulling yourself together.’ Thankfully, these sort of outdated attitudes are becoming less and less common.

In reality, anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness.

It’s your nervous system trying to protect you. Unfortunately, it often ends up protecting you from situations that aren’t actually dangerous.

The problem isn’t that your brain is failing. The problem is that it’s become a little overprotective, responding to situations as though they’re far more threatening and dangerous than they really are.

One of the biggest shifts I see in my clinic is when people stop criticising themselves for feeling anxious and start understanding what anxiety is actually trying to do.

Why Do I Feel Anxious?

Misunderstanding 2: Every Anxious Thought Deserves Your Attention

Anxiety has a remarkable ability to make thoughts feel urgent and important.

I can remember spending hours trying to think my way out of anxiety. The more I analysed every thought, the more anxious I became. Looking back now, I realise I wasn’t solving anxiety, I was accidentally feeding it.

You might find yourself repeatedly asking:

  • What if something goes wrong?
  • What if people are judging me?
  • What if I can’t cope?

The what if and worst case thoughts keep going around your mind and can move form one thing to another.

Because anxiety creates uncertainty, it’s tempting to analyse every thought in an attempt to feel more certain.  Every anxious thought feels as though it needs solving immediately.

Unfortunately, this often keeps the cycle going.

Not every anxious thought needs an answer.

Sometimes recognising that a thought is simply a product of an anxious mind can be far more helpful than trying to solve it.

Overthinking and Anxiety

Misunderstanding 3: Physical Symptoms Mean Something Serious Is Happening

One of the reasons anxiety can feel so frightening is because of the uncomfortable physical symptoms it creates.

  • A racing heart
  • Chest tightness
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Tingling
  • Shaking

These sensations can understandably make you fear that something serious is wrong.

In most cases, however, these are normal responses from an activated nervous system rather than signs that you’re in immediate danger.

Understanding why these symptoms happen often reduces the fear surrounding them, helping you stop accidentally feeding the anxiety cycle.

Physical Anxiety Symptoms

Misunderstanding 4: Avoiding Anxiety Helps It Go Away

Avoidance is the number one strategy people use to try and cope with anxiety.

Avoidance usually brings short-term relief. If something makes you anxious, it makes perfect sense to avoid it. The threat goes away and you feel better for a while.

The difficulty is that every time you avoid a situation, your brain receives the message that the situation really was dangerous.

That makes anxiety more likely to return the next time.

One pattern I see repeatedly is that anxiety gradually persuades people to make their lives smaller without them even realising it’s happening.

Recovery often begins with taking small, manageable steps towards the things anxiety has convinced you to avoid.

I remember one client who had gradually stopped driving, then shopping alone and eventually even turning down invitations from friends. None of those decisions happened overnight. Anxiety had quietly persuaded them their world needed to become smaller. As their confidence returned, so did their freedom.

Fear of Losing Control and Anxiety

Misunderstanding 5: Recovery Means Never Feeling Anxious Again

Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding of all is believing that successful recovery means you’ll never experience anxiety again. One of the most common things people tell me at their first appointment is that they never want to feel anxious ever again.

The truth is that anxiety is a normal human emotion and everyone experiences it from time to time.

Recovery isn’t about eliminating anxiety completely.

It’s about changing your relationship with it so that it no longer controls your choices, your confidence or your life. You calm the irrational, unnecessary anxiety.

That shift in expectation is often one of the most reassuring conversations I have with clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the biggest misunderstandings about anxiety?

Many people mistakenly believe anxiety means they’re weak, losing control or that every anxious thought is important. Understanding what’s really happening often helps anxiety become much less frightening.

Can understanding anxiety actually reduce it?

Understanding anxiety doesn’t remove it by itself, but it often removes much of the fear surrounding it. Once people understand what’s happening, they’re usually in a much better position to make positive changes.

Why does avoiding anxiety make it worse?

Avoidance provides short-term relief but teaches your brain the situation was dangerous, making anxiety more likely to return in the future.

Does recovering from anxiety mean never feeling anxious again?

No. Recovery is about anxiety no longer controlling your life rather than never experiencing it again.

Personalised Support for Anxiety

If anxiety is stopping you from living the life you’d like to live, personalised support can make a real difference.

Many people tell me they wish they’d sought help sooner rather than struggling alone for months or years. Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but with the right understanding and support it can become much less frightening and much more manageable.
