Healthcare anxiety can be a constant lingering worry that lurks at the back of your mind. You see things on TV and in the press about health issues. People tell you about their ailments and treatments. But at some point avoidance no longer becomes an option and you have to face it. Before they see me, they’ve spent a lifetime avoiding it and putting it off. For some people even going to a doctor’s appointment or walking into a hospital to visit someone is too much. For others, that bit is ok but when there is talk of arranging injections, blood tests or other procedures, they hold off and procrastinate so that their health problem persists. Knowing that something needs to be done just prolongs the dread and panic. There is the ongoing discomfort of knowing you need to do something for your own well-being (and that things may only deteriorate) combined with the dread, worry and panic when you think about taking those next steps.
It almost seems like a balancing act between which you can endure for the longest, your health issues or the constant anxiety. Neither option may seem that great. It’s a cycle of physical, emotional and psychological suffering.
When you know you need to visit your GP for a check up, undergo a procedure at hospital or need an injection, your anxiety and fear start to massively escalate. The thought of it dominates your mind and impacts upon the rest of life. It can cause tension, irritability, restlessness and sleepless nights. Even if your appointment is still quite some way off, you still feel anxious because you know it is coming. It sits near the front of your awareness whenever you can’t distract yourself. Your anxiety may even tell you that things will be catastrophic, maybe even that there won’t be life beyond your appointment or procedure.
You may have had previous unpleasant healthcare experiences or find yourself worrying about the worst case and things going wrong. The unknown, the uncertainty and the sense that you won’t be in control can all contribute to your anxiety and panic.

Healthcare anxiety creates a double edged sword of feeling bad. Either you face it and feel anxious, or you don’t face it and feel anxious. Right now, it probably seems like a no win situation.
With anxiety, you will worry about not being in control and not knowing what might happen. However, the bit you can always learn how to control is your own thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions.
