Confidence Multiplied – How Small Actions Build Confidence
Confidence Multiplied – How Small Actions Build Confidence
Do you live within your comfort zone, doing the same things day after day?
Obviously if you are happy where you are then that is fine! Yet many people feel stuck in the treadmill of their life, doing the same things over and over and getting nowhere even though they want to move forward.
We are all hard wired to want to learn and grow to feel fulfilled and more confident…so for most of us standing still isn’t much of a fulfilling option.
Quick Summary
Confidence rarely appears all at once.
In this article you’ll discover:
- why confidence grows through action
- why staying in your comfort zone keeps confidence stuck
- how small challenges build self-belief
- why confidence develops gradually
- a simple confidence-building exercise you can start today
Many people wait until they feel confident before taking action. More often, confidence develops because they take action first.

One Thing I Learned About Confidence
When my confidence was low, I used to think I needed to feel confident before doing difficult things. Looking back, that was completely backwards.
Confidence didn’t appear first.
Confidence grew because I started doing things despite feeling uncomfortable. Every conversation, meeting, presentation and social situation became evidence that I could cope.
The more evidence I collected, the stronger my confidence became.
Why Confidence Gets Stuck
Many people accidentally keep confidence low because they avoid situations that make them feel uncomfortable.
Avoidance creates immediate relief.
Unfortunately, it also teaches the brain: “That situation must have been dangerous.”
The more you avoid, the more confidence shrinks.
The more you gradually engage with situations, the more confidence grows.
Confidence Multiplied
The good news is that confidence doesn’t require huge changes. Small actions repeated consistently can create surprisingly powerful results.
So to start stretching that comfort zone and feeling naturally more confident and motivated do this:
Starting TODAY – do one small thing that pushes you to the limits of your confidence – maybe it’s phoning instead of e-mailing; maybe you can start a conversation about nothing with a stranger; or maybe you make a start on that thinking you’ve been putting off. Whatever it is, do it today.
Tomorrow do two small things which push at your comfort levels. You may feel a bit nervous, a bit apprehensive but do it anyway!
In two days’ time do three small things and keep doing three small things every day for the next week. Then go back to one and start again.
In no time at all, through taking small steps, you’ll be living more and more the fulfilling, confident life that’s waiting for you now.
Confidence does not usually grow through giant leaps.
It grows through repeated experiences that teach you:
- I can cope.
- I can handle discomfort.
- I can survive mistakes.
- I can do difficult things.
- I don’t need to be perfect.
Small actions repeated consistently are often far more powerful than waiting for motivation or confidence to arrive first.
Frequently Asked Questions About Confidence
How do I build confidence?
Confidence grows through experience, practice and repeatedly proving to yourself that you can cope with challenges. To do this you need to start directing your own thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions.
Why does my confidence stay low?
Many people become trapped in cycles of avoidance, overthinking and self-doubt that prevent them building new evidence of success.
Do I need to feel confident before taking action?
Usually not. Confidence often develops after taking action rather than before it.
What if I feel nervous?
Feeling nervous is completely normal. Confidence is not the absence of nerves. It is learning that you can move forward despite them and knowing you’ll be ok.
Can hypnotherapy help confidence?
Many people find hypnotherapy helps reduce anxiety, overthinking and self-criticism, allowing confidence to develop more naturally.
Support for Confidence
Confidence is not something you need to force. It often develops naturally as anxiety settles and thinking patterns shift.
In my work as an anxiety therapist in Ely, many people who struggle with confidence are not lacking ability – they are dealing with patterns of anxiety and overthinking.
These get in the way of you doing what you know you are capable of doing.
If anxiety, confidence or self-esteem has been affecting how you feel day-to-day, it’s important to know that this is something that can change. Support is available.
A free initial consultation is there simply to talk things through and see what might help, without pressure or expectation.
