The football World Cup is here! Having never seen Wales at a world cup before in my lifetime, it’s something super exciting to be able to watch them at the biggest tournament in the world!

There are a whole host of non football related issues around this world cup, yet from my sports psychology perspective, it’s a useful opportunity to remind you of how hypnotherapy can help you with your confidence and performance if you are a footballer.

If you play football, then you’ll already know that your mindset is just as important as your physical fitness, skill and technique. You need to be able to calmly make decisions, respond to setbacks, keep focused and play to your confident best. If you lose your focus, get too emotional or let a negative thought grow inside of your head, then the rest of your game can go out of the window.

Football confidence hypnotherapy can help you to improve your football performance through management of your emotional levels, effective visualisation and harnessing your self-talk constructively. You can draw upon previous successful performances, learn from role models, build your sense of self belief and capability and prime your mind for successful performance.

Whatever your level of playing, you want to perform to your best and enjoy your football and be using effective sports psychology hypnotherapy, you can achieve just that.

 

Football Performance Hypnotherapy

Research has demonstrated that hypnosis can be a very effective tool for helping you to enhance and improve your sports performance. Hypnosis has been shown to be effective for improving performance in a variety of sports, with some of the strongest support being for football.

Psychological interventions used to enhance sports performance include visualisation (or mental rehearsal), learning to modify and direct self-talk during training and competition, arousal regulation (e.g. to decrease anxiety) and goal setting around improved performance.

Hypnosis for sports performance can also help you to build confidence and self-belief, reduce anxiety and stress and to develop motivation and focus in your training and matches.

And we have the research and evidence that shows hypnosis to be effective for improving performance in football.

Research has examined the effects of a soccer psychological skills intervention, comprising relaxation, imagery and self-talk, on footballer performance using techniques such as relaxation, imagery and self talk. These can all help you with things such as managing tension when performance isn’t going well, such as after making a mistake, a bad first touch or losing control of the ball (which can undermine your confidence and lead to increased tension and so more performance errors).

Football confidence hypnotherapy can help you with improving your performance with your first touch, passing and tackling during a match, as well as being able to quickly recover when any of these doesn’t go quite right for you.

Of course, issues off the pitch can also impact upon your performance and hypnotherapy can help you with these things too.

Watching the World Cup, it’s easy to see the importance of your mindset on your playing. There are millions watching your every pass, tackle, shot and move. Decision making, positioning and the ability to handle adversity are all key factors in any successful performance. And that’s even without the pressure of standing there and being about to take part in a penalty shoot-out with the hopes of a nation upon your shoulders.

Whatever level of football you play at, your confidence and mindset are key attributes if you want to play at your best and enjoy your playing. I’ve worked with players who lose focus after a perceived mistake, getting lost in self criticism, fear of failure and worry about what others think. One mistake or setback can affect the entire rest of their game (and that negativity can linger long afterwards too).

I’ve also worked with those who can call upon positive experiences on the pitch but who, for whatever reason, are struggling to get the confidence in their own ability back in place, sometimes to the point that they are considering quitting the game they love due to the sense of pressure and disappointment that they feel.

Football hypnotherapy can help you to improve your decision making, take all of your training into the match and strengthen your own confidence in your playing ability. With your football confidence back in place you can enjoy your training and playing, be focused in your mindset, draw upon your ability and progress and improve as a player.

Teams and players at the World Cup know the importance of psychology, which is why they invest so much time, effort and training into it. The more confident you feel in yourself and your ability, the better you will likely play. And history tell us that it isn’t always the most technically gifted team that lifts the trophy, it’s often the team filled with players who can handle the pressure and who feel positive and confident and who are then enjoying their playing.
