What Is The Success Rate of Hypnotherapy?
‘What is the success rate of hypnotherapy?’ is a question that comes up fairly regularly when I am meeting someone for the first time at a free initial consultation. After all, you may have no previous experience of hypnotherapy and you want to be confident that working with me is a good investment to support your mental health.
If you are considering hypnotherapy to help you deal with something like anxiety, fear or low self-esteem, then I’d always suggest coming along and meeting in person as the first step. That way you can be sure that you are comfortable with me and the surroundings before you decide to go ahead with sessions. It provides an opportunity to talk through the challenges you are currently facing and how we can work together to help you overcome them. And, of course, I cover what hypnotherapy is, how it works and I’ll answer any questions you have.
When it comes to the success rate of hypnotherapy, there is not some definitive percentage response, although as you’ll have seen from my reviews, the vast majority of people I work with get a positive result. No therapy is one hundred percent guaranteed to help all the people all the time. Hypnotherapy is not some magical thing that is done to you and so there are a number of factors involved that support achieving a positive outcome. Hypnotherapy is not a passive therapy done to you whilst you do nothing. It is an active therapeutic process that involves some input, commitment, effort and actually doing some stuff that will help you to feel better.
And after all, if you are struggling with an issue in your life, what would you rather do, nothing? Or maybe you’d rather actively take back control over your own thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions?
Hypnotic Success
If you regularly read my articles then you’ll know I’m a keen runner. I’m out most weekends completing a few miles. In any sport, your mindset is important. There are many ways that your thoughts, feelings and belief in your own capability can either help or hinder how you perform and how much enjoyment you derive from what you are doing.
We all know mindset and psychology is important for sports performance. Yet you also need to actually lace up your trainers and go out and do some running. You have to put some time and effort into achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself. And so it is with hypnotherapy. Whilst many positives changes can be accomplished from altering and changing aspects of what goes on inside your head in our own thinking, feeling, perception and belief, you still want to support this by actively taking positive steps in your every day life. You benefit from putting a bit of effort in to interrupt negative thoughts and to foster more beneficial thoughts, feelings and behaviours that build and maintain you feeling better.
Success with hypnotherapy involves you doing some stuff to support your own mental health and well-being. Those skills benefit you now and give you the tools to manage life’s challenges in the future. That’s what those people who have kindly given me four hundred plus reviews actively did alongside their sessions.
Of course, what happens in the hypnotherapy sessions is important to. You mind works on pattern, habit and repetition and so you need to understand how your anxiety (or other issue) is continuing to happen in order to change it.
In many ways you could say there are three aspects that support the success rate of hypnotherapy. There is what I do, there is what you do and there is how we work together (another reason supporting the decision to meet for an in person consultation before getting into the therapy itself).
Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Hypnotherapy has evidence to support it’s effectiveness for a wide variety of issues and problems, It can help with anxiety, stress, trauma, habits, IBS, depression, sports psychology and many other issues.
For example, hypnotherapy has strong evidence to support its effectiveness for alleviating anxiety.
Looking at the overall effectiveness of hypnosis as a treatment for anxiety, a study by Valentine et al (2019) found that hypnosis is a highly effective intervention for anxiety. From the evidence they concluded that: “hypnosis is a highly effective intervention for anxiety. Our results indicate the average participant treated with hypnosis achieved more anxiety reduction than about 79% of control participants at the end of active treatment and about 84% of controls at the longest follow-up“.
That is a pretty amazing level of effectiveness and shows just how valuable hypnotherapy can be as a treatment for anxiety.
Despite some of the wacky claims out there about hypnosis involving talking to your subconscious mind, hypnotherapy is actually about drawing upon your ordinary psychological processes for a purpose. That’s why it can work so effectively, because you are taking the things you do anyway and learning how to manage them and orchestrate them purposefully and beneficially (instead of what goes on inside your own head being something that just happens to you).
It’s true that the results you achieve can often seem sort of magical. Yet, they involve deliberate focus and attention upon what you think and feel and how you do these things. That is what gives hypnotherapy such a great success rate. On top of that, you can support your own positive results by taking positive action. You get to learn how to manage and be in control of your own thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions. As we work together to help you overcome your issues, we build positive momentum and you find yourself feeling better and better. You get to achieve your goals successfully and to know how you can keep those positive results continuing long into the future.
