Why Health Anxiety Feels So Real (And Why Reassurance Doesn’t Last)

Health anxiety feels real because your brain is trying to protect you. It focuses on physical sensations and treats them as important, even when they are harmless. You can very quickly become certain that there is something very seriously wrong with you.

When I talk to my health anxiety clients in Ely, they often tell me how their health anxiety can quickly take over. They see or hear something about a medical issue and start to become hyper focused on their own body and physical sensations.

They start to become convinced that they are experiencing something similar. Their anxiety leads them to worry that a headache is a sign of a brain tumour or a chest pain is a sign of heart disease. The more focused upon it they become, the more real it seems. Seeking medical help is a regular occurrence, only to be told each time that everything is fine.

Even when they’ve been reassured that everything is okay, the doubt can quickly return. The results must have missed something or another test is needed to find out why they feel so bad.

Thoughts about your health can feel persistent, urgent and difficult to ignore. All the adverts and mentions of cancer, heart disease and other serious medical issues seem to pop up all the time, sparking the cycle of health anxiety.

Health anxiety feels real because it is driven by the body’s threat system, not just your thoughts. You feel so anxious that your mind starts to seek the cause of the worry. And your imagination will always find something to latch on to, leading to even more anxiety. You focus upon your body even more and start to notice even more. It can take over your thinking.

The anxiety over your health itself leads to physical sensations in your body. These anxious feelings can easily lead you to become even more convinced that something is very wrong.

Health anxiety is not just about concern and worrying about your health – it is driven by how the brain responds to anxiety, uncertainty and physical sensations.

What Is Health Anxiety?

Health anxiety involves a heightened awareness of your body and a tendency to interpret normal or harmless sensations as something serious.

This might include:

  • noticing small physical sensations more intensely
  • worrying about what those sensations mean
  • repeatedly checking symptoms
  • seeking reassurance from doctors, Google or others

This cycle can be triggered by hearing or seeing something health related, or in response to noticing a small sensation in your body.

Why It Feels So Convincing

Health anxiety is powerful because it combines:

  • physical sensations
  • focused attention
  • interpretation

For example, a normal sensation such as a slight change in breathing or a minor ache can quickly become the focus of attention.

The more you focus upon it, the more serious it seems.

The brain then asks:

“What if this is something serious?”

This triggers anxiety, which increases physical sensations – reinforcing the concern.

You can get caught in a loop where the physical sensations of anxiety are interpreted as evidence of something being wrong. This leads to more health anxiety and more intense physical sensations which become further evidence of something being seriously wrong.

These sensations and thoughts can feel very convincing, but they are a product of anxiety – not a sign that something is seriously wrong.

The Reassurance Cycle

With any anxiety, a common response is to seek reassurance.

One of the most confusing parts of health anxiety is that this reassurance usually doesn’t last. This is often even true after seeing a doctor and having several medical tests.

The pattern becomes:

Notice bodily sensation – worry about what it means – seek reassurance – feel better briefly – doubt returns.

Your anxious physical sensations lead you to continue bodily sensations that are interpreted as a threat by your anxious mind.

You start to become convinced they have missed something, that the test wasn’t accurate or that something else needs to be investigated.

You may also notice a pattern of repeatedly searching symptoms online or checking how your body feels, which can unintentionally increase anxiety.

Why Reassurance Stops Working

Although reassurance can feel helpful in the moment, it can unintentionally keep the cycle going.

This is because the brain learns:

“This must be important – keep checking.”

Over time, this can make you more aware of sensations and quicker to interpret them as a threat. You struggle to think logically and doubt your own judgement.

Your anxious brain can push you to seek ongoing reassurance to try and end the uncertainty.

You can read more about how this pattern develops in my article on health anxiety and online health information seeking.

The Role of the Body

Health anxiety is not “just in your head”.

The body plays a central role.

Anxiety activates the nervous system, which can create real physical sensations such as:

  • a racing heart
  • dizziness
  • tension
  • changes in breathing

You can read more about physical anxiety symptoms and how the body responds to stress.

Health anxiety leads you to focus upon, and become fixated about, these sensations in your body. You feel so anxious that your mind seeks the source of the threat. You can easily start to interpret the bodily feelings as evidence of something sinister.

As with all anxiety, the ability to reason and think logically vanishes. You start to emotionally respond to your own body and health and that continues to drive the cycle of anxiety.

A Common Experience

In my work as an anxiety therapist in Ely, many people describe a similar pattern.

A small or harmless sensation becomes the focus of attention. This leads to concern, checking and reassurance seeking.

You may have felt fine but someone mentions a health issue in conversation or you see and hear something health related and you start to apply that condition to yourself. The ‘what if’ thoughts creep in.

Although reassurance may help briefly, the doubt often returns – sometimes stronger than before.

This can create a feeling that something serious is being missed, even when it is not.

What Helps with Health Anxiety?

The aim is not to eliminate sensations, but to change how they are interpreted and responded to.

Helpful approaches include:

  • reducing checking and reassurance
  • understanding how anxiety affects the body
  • allowing uncertainty without trying to eliminate it
  • shifting attention away from constant monitoring
  • calming thoughts and perceptions so you think more clearly

You may also find it helpful to learn how to calm anxiety in the moment, particularly when symptoms feel intense.

When It Feels Overwhelming

Health anxiety can feel exhausting, especially when your attention is constantly drawn back to your body.

It can affect:

  • concentration
  • sleep
  • confidence in your own health

It can start to consume your every thought. And any mention of health issues seems to trigger the anxiety even further.

If this is something you’ve experienced, you’re not alone – and this pattern can change.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Health anxiety is part of a wider pattern of anxiety that can continue over time.

If it feels like this keeps returning, you may find it helpful to understand why anxiety isn’t going away on its own, and how these patterns develop.

You can also read more about how health anxiety can impact day-to-day life in my article on health anxiety disorder risks.
