Guided Self Hypnosis For Calm and Confidence
Guided Self Hypnosis For Calm and Confidence
Today I’m sharing a short guided self hypnosis technique for calm and confidence. This fits nicely alongside the strategies I covered in my last article about Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy for anxiety (go check that out if you haven’t already).
Problematic anxiety may be something you’ve always struggled with, or perhaps it is something relatively new. Either way, you struggle with the racing thoughts and overthinking. And with all the uncomfortable feelings that come with it.
You feel stressed and uncertain and your mind and body slip into a pattern of tension, worry and overthinking. The more anxious you feel, the more your thoughts race from one negative thing to another. Those thoughts then worry you even more and create more tension. The more anxious you feel, the harder it becomes to switch off from it.
An effective way to calm anxiety and support your confidence is through self hypnosis. I’ve covered a brief guided self hypnosis script for calm and confidence further down this page. You can use this alongside the other strategies I cover in my articles to start to direct your thoughts and feelings so that you feel better in yourself. Self hypnosis is a natural way to physically relax, quieten your mind and draw upon your capability to reprogramme your mind for positive change.
With regular practice, you can prime your mind to respond to challenges with calmness and confidence instead of stress and tension.
You may already be familiar with self hypnosis. It is a way of orchestrating your mind into a calm, focused and relaxed state. In some ways it overlaps with meditation and mindfulness. Here, you have a specific purpose in mind. You are using your mind to feel calm now and to take the calmness and confidence into the future,

Hypnosis is about drawing upon normal psychological processes to make positive changes to your patterns of thinking and feeling. Within this mindset, it becomes easier to change unhelpful thought processes, reduce anxious responses and strengthen feelings of confidence and control.
Guided Self Hypnosis For Calm and Confidence
This is a short guided self hypnosis exercise to help you build your sense of calmness and confidence. You can read it slowly to yourself, record it and play it back or simply follow the words in your mind.
1. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed for a while.
2. When you’re ready, take a deep breath in and, as you breathe out, allow your eyes to comfortably close. Focus upon your breathing. Taking deep breaths in and then a longer, slower breath out. Imagine that you are breathing in calm, and then breathing out tension. With every out breath, tell yourself you are letting go and relaxing more and more. Allow your shoulders to soften, your jaw to relax and your hands to rest easily.
3. Now, imagine a wave of relaxation spreading gently from the top of your head all the way down to your toes. You could imagine a colour of calmness flowing through you, a sound of calmness resonating or gently tell yourself how every part of your body is becoming more calm, content and comfortable. Let each breath strengthen that feeling, melting away any tension.
4. In your mind’s eye, imagine a place that you consider to be peaceful. It might be a quiet beach with the sounds of waves washing in and out. Maybe it’s a forest path where the sunlight filters through the trees. It could be a comfortable room where you feel safe, relaxed and completely at ease. Or any other place that you consider to be peaceful.
Wherever your place, spend a few moments there, noticing the colours, the sounds and the details around you. Tell yourself that the more time you spend here, the calmer you are feeling in your mind and in your body.
5. While in this place of calmness, inside of your head, say to yourself
‘I am safe. I am calm, I can handle whatever comes my way.’
‘My body knows how to relax. My mind knows how to focus.’
‘I am calm, confident and in control. Every day, I am becoming stronger, more confident and more in control.’
As you repeat the words, really say them to yourself like you mean them. Let them soak through your mind and body. Repeat them with undeniable conviction and belief that this is who and how you are.
6. Inside of your mind, imagine taking the thoughts and feelings of being calm and confident into those moments where you will benefit from them. Imagine being there, feeling calm and confident, and handling whatever comes your way. Tell yourself that you will be this way in these future moments.
7. When you are ready to bring this to an end, take a slow breathe in, and as you breathe out open your eyes and bring your focus back to the room.
The effects of this self hypnosis for calm and confidence process grow more effective with practice. Even five minutes a day can help you build your skill at becoming more relaxed mentally and physically. The more you practice, the more you’ll be able to draw upon those thoughts and feelings as you go about your life.
