Horse Riding Fear To Riding Confidence
Horse Riding Fear to Riding Confidence – Hypnotherapy in Ely and Newmarket
Does the thought of riding fill you with fear and dread?
It may be that horse riding fear just crept up to the point where it is now a problem weighing you down, or maybe you had a nasty experience that now seems to hold you back from riding how you want to.
Working in Cambridgeshire and Newmarket I naturally work with a lot of people who want to regain a sense of riding confidence. Whether you are someone who rides for leisure or fun, or someone who works in the horse racing industry or who competes, it is possible to eliminate that fear and enjoy riding again.
Quick Summary
Loss of riding confidence can happen to anyone, from leisure riders to experienced competitors and people working in the racing industry.
In this article you’ll discover:
- why riding confidence can suddenly disappear
- how anxiety and fear affect performance
- why avoidance often makes the problem worse
- how confidence can begin to return
- a real example of someone overcoming riding anxiety
Many riders assume they have lost their confidence permanently. More often, anxiety has become attached to riding and the brain has started treating it as something threatening rather than enjoyable.

Many confidence problems are closely linked to anxiety, overthinking and fear of failure. These resources explain more about how those patterns develop and what can help.
Horse Riding Confidence
There can be many reasons for a lack of horse riding confidence.
For example, I have helped people who work in the racing industry and who, after a fall or a kick, now feel anxious about riding out. Added to the fear of riding itself was the worry that if their anxiety became noticeable, it could affect their reputation or even their job.
I have also helped women who found that the stress and anxiety of everyday life crept into their riding and seemed to stick despite everything else being resolved.
And there are those who wanted to compete but got too nervous to remember the sequences or were so worried about what the judges may be thinking that they didn’t perform to the best of their ability.
Why Riding Confidence Can Disappear
Many people assume confidence simply disappears overnight.
In reality, confidence usually changes for a reason.
Common causes include:
- a fall or riding accident
- a near miss
- losing trust in a horse
- returning to riding after a break
- pressure to perform or compete
- anxiety in other areas of life spilling into riding
One thing I often notice is that the fear is rarely just about riding itself. In many cases, people trust the horse far more than they trust their own ability to cope with the anxiety they experience while riding.
People begin worrying about panicking, losing control, looking foolish, letting others down or not performing to the standard they expect of themselves.
The riding becomes associated with anxiety and the brain starts treating it as a threat rather than something enjoyable.
Horse Riding Success Story
Recently I helped a wonderful lady who had become increasingly anxious about riding.
Like many riders, she knew logically she was capable, but the fear and dread before riding had started to take much of the enjoyment away.
A few weeks later she sent me a fantastic video.
She was riding down a route she had previously avoided, on her own, on a windy day, and even a large bin lorry passed by without triggering the anxiety and panic she had experienced before.
Seeing people regain their confidence and enjoyment is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Moments like that remind people that confidence is often still there underneath the fear. Sometimes it simply needs the opportunity to come back through.
Frequently Asked Questions About Horse Riding Confidence
Why have I suddenly lost confidence riding?
Many riders experience a loss of confidence after a fall, near miss, stressful life event or period away from riding. The brain begins treating riding as something threatening, which creates anxiety and self-doubt.
Can experienced riders develop riding anxiety?
Absolutely. Loss of confidence can affect beginners and highly experienced riders alike.
Why do I avoid certain routes or situations?
Avoidance often develops because it provides short-term relief from anxiety. Unfortunately, it can also reinforce the fear and make confidence harder to rebuild.
Is riding anxiety linked to general anxiety?
Often, yes. Many people find that stress, anxiety and overthinking in other areas of life begin affecting their riding confidence too.
Can hypnotherapy help riding confidence?
Many riders find hypnotherapy helps reduce anxiety, fear and overthinking while rebuilding confidence and enjoyment.
Ending Fear Of Horse Riding
Are you fed up of the dread of riding and all that stomach churning, heart racing stuff that goes with it? Maybe you are fed up of finding reasons and excuses to avoid riding because of all the worst case scenarios and the panic (as well as the worry about panicking).
If you want to find out how you can move from riding fear to riding confidence and start enjoying your riding again, then get in touch and ask to book your free initial consultation and start looking forward to riding with a smile on your face again.
