Find Your Strengths: A Simple Way to Build Confidence and Self-Esteem

Do you spend too much time criticising yourself and putting yourself down?

If you struggle with low self esteem and low confidence it may feel all too natural to accept criticism from yourself and others and to focus on perceived flaws in what you are capable of.

So now is the time to start balancing the picture and paying more attention to your strengths.

Quick Summary

Low confidence often causes people to focus on their weaknesses while overlooking their strengths.

In this article you’ll discover:

  • why low confidence makes strengths difficult to see
  • how anxiety and self-doubt distort self-perception
  • why recognising strengths improves confidence
  • a simple exercise to help you see yourself more realistically
  • how confidence grows through evidence rather than self-criticism

Many people who struggle with confidence spend years focusing on what they think is wrong with them. Confidence often improves when you begin recognising what is already right.

One Thing I Learned About Confidence

When my own confidence was low, I spent a huge amount of time focusing on what I thought was wrong with me.

I noticed the things I struggled with.

I noticed situations where I felt anxious.

I noticed mistakes.

What I didn’t notice nearly as much were the things I was already doing well.

Looking back, one of the biggest shifts was learning to recognise strengths I had previously dismissed as ordinary.

Being kind.

Being reliable.

Helping other people.

Showing up even when I felt uncomfortable.

Many people overlook their strengths because they seem normal to them. Yet those strengths are often exactly what other people admire and value. This is often closely linked to the inner critic that many people carry around with them

Boost Your Confidence

Sometimes it’s all too easy to focus and dwell on the things that aren’t going so well or we can’t yet do as well as we would like. And when you do that, often you lose sight of all the things you can do and that are going well.

Low confidence creates a distorted picture. You focus heavily on weaknesses, mistakes and perceived shortcomings while giving very little attention to strengths, successes and positive qualities.

The result is that you start seeing yourself through an increasingly negative lens.

Building confidence often begins by creating a more balanced and realistic picture of who you are.

Finding Your Strengths

Starting today, make a list of all the things you do well.

Include:

  • skills you have developed
  • challenges you have overcome
  • things other people appreciate about you
  • personal qualities you value
  • achievements you are proud of

Don’t dismiss things because they feel ordinary.

If you’ve maintained friendships, supported loved ones, learnt new skills, worked through difficult times or kept going when things felt challenging, those are all strengths.

Many people with low confidence ignore these qualities because they have become so familiar.

Yet those strengths are often powerful evidence of resilience, determination, kindness and capability.

Confidence grows when you start recognising the evidence that is already there.

Why This Helps Confidence

One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing confidence comes from becoming perfect.

In reality, confidence usually grows when you start seeing yourself more accurately.

Nobody is good at everything.

Nobody gets everything right.

Healthy confidence comes from recognising both strengths and weaknesses without allowing either to define your entire identity.

The more balanced your view of yourself becomes, the easier it is to trust yourself and feel comfortable being who you are.

Frequently Asked Questions About Confidence and Strengths

Why do I focus on my weaknesses?

Many people with low confidence become highly aware of perceived flaws, mistakes and shortcomings. Anxiety often encourages the mind to focus on potential problems while overlooking strengths.

How does recognising strengths improve confidence?

Confidence grows when you acknowledge evidence of your abilities, qualities and achievements. Recognising strengths creates a more balanced and realistic view of yourself. It’s okay to not be perfect at everything – we can all improve in some area of our lives. However, you want to purposefully appreciate your strengths too.

Isn’t this just positive thinking?

No. It is not about pretending weaknesses don’t exist. It is about recognising strengths as well as weaknesses rather than focusing exclusively on what you think is wrong.

Why do compliments make me uncomfortable?

People with low confidence often dismiss positive feedback because it doesn’t fit with how they see themselves. Learning to accept compliments can help build a healthier self-image.

Can hypnotherapy help confidence?

Many people find hypnotherapy helps reduce anxiety, self-doubt and self-criticism while increasing confidence, self-belief and emotional resilience.
