Why So Many People Feel Mentally Exhausted Right Now | Ely Standard Article

Why do so many people feel mentally exhausted right now?

Following my recent article in the Ely Standard, I wanted to explore this topic in a little more depth because it’s something that comes up increasingly often in my work with anxiety, stress and overthinking.

Many people appear to be coping reasonably well from the outside while internally feeling mentally exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed or constantly ‘switched on’.

They may still be:

– working
– socialising
– supporting family
– meeting responsibilities
– getting through everyday life

Yet internally they may feel:

– mentally drained
– emotionally overloaded
– stuck in constant overthinking
– unable to properly switch off
– overwhelmed by pressure or worry

Often, people describe feeling exhausted even when they’ve rested physically because the mind itself rarely feels calm. All the ongoing anxiety, stress and overthinking drains your inner battery and makes everything feel more of a struggle or battle.

Anxiety Doesn’t Always Look Obvious

One of the biggest misconceptions about anxiety for people who have never experienced it, is that it always appears dramatic or visible.

In reality, many people become very good at functioning while internally battling:

– racing thoughts
– fear of judgement
– constant worry
– panic symptoms
– emotional exhaustion
– self-doubt

On the outside, things appear under control. Internally and in quieter moments, it can feel very different. Over time, this ongoing mental pressure can gradually wear the nervous system down.

Many people start living in a near-constant state of alertness without fully realising how much anxiety is affecting them.

When Overthinking Becomes Exhausting

One of the most draining aspects of anxiety is often overthinking. It feels like your mind never properly switches off.

The mind becomes stuck analysing:

– conversations
– future situations
– possible problems
– what other people may think
– whether something might go wrong

It can become habitual and seemingly automatic to think, replay, dwell and ruminate. The mental noise never slows down.

Even during quieter moments, the nervous system can remain internally tense and alert.

This is one reason many people describe feeling:

– mentally tired
– emotionally flat
– disconnected from enjoyment
– unable to properly relax

Even when you relax physically, mentally, your mind still feels constantly active.

Anxiety Can Quietly Affect Everyday Life

When anxiety continues for long periods, people often gradually begin adapting their lives around it.

This may include:

– avoiding situations
– withdrawing socially
– cancelling plans
– struggling with motivation
– becoming emotionally overwhelmed more easily
– losing confidence

It becomes an effort to get things done and you long for mental relief from it all that never seems to come.

And because these patterns often develop gradually, many people begin assuming this is simply ‘how life is now.’

But anxiety patterns can change.

Things Can Become More Manageable Again

One of the encouraging things about anxiety is that, even when it feels deeply ingrained, change is possible.

As people begin understanding anxiety differently and the nervous system becomes calmer and more regulated, many notice improvements in:

– confidence
– emotional resilience
– sleep and energy
– overthinking
– stress levels
– ability to enjoy life again

Often, one of the first major shifts is simply understanding that anxiety has been driving far more of life than they previously realised. Once you can recognise the patterns of thoughts and feelings, you can start to do something about changing it.
