What to Expect in Your First Hypnotherapy Session

What to Expect in Your First Hypnotherapy Session
In this post, I’ll walk you through what happens in your first hypnotherapy session so you feel prepared, calm and confident – from your free consultation to the hypnotherapy experience itself.
Starting hypnotherapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. You may not have seen a therapist before but someone has recommended me or you’ve read through my reviews. Or perhaps you’ve had hours of therapy and you feel no better so coming to see me seems like your last hope.
Either way, you may feel curious, positive, sceptical or slightly nervous before your first session. This may be because it is all new to you or it may be influenced by myths and misunderstandings about hypnosis.
It’s why I always suggest starting with a free consultation in Ely or Newmarket. We can meet in person, talk through how I work and how I can help you, and I’ll answer any questions you have. Once you go ahead we have a shared understanding and you’ll have already met me and seen my office before your first hypnotherapy session.
If you’re considering hypnotherapy and wondering what actually happens in a session, this guide will help you feel more prepared, reassured, and confident about taking that next step.
Is It Normal to Feel Nervous Before Hypnotherapy?
Yes – completely.
Most people come to hypnotherapy because something hasn’t felt manageable for a while, whether that’s anxiety, panic, habits, confidence, or emotional overwhelm. Feeling unsure beforehand doesn’t mean hypnotherapy isn’t right for you, it simply means you’re human.
Many clients are surprised by how relaxed and natural their first session feels.
Your Free Initial Hypnotherapy Consultation
I always suggest starting with a free initial hypnotherapy consultation. Your free consultation is a chance to meet, discuss your goals and understand how hypnotherapy could help you.
This gives us a chance to meet in person at my office in Ely or Newmarket (or online). You can tell me about what you are struggling with and how you would like to change. And I’ll tell you about how I work and how I can help you. I’ll also answer any questions you may have before going ahead with hypnotherapy sessions.
This sets us up with the perfect grounding and shared understanding to move forward and help you achieve your goals.
Your First Hypnotherapy Session: Step by Step
1. A Calm, Supportive Conversation
Your first hypnotherapy session at my Ely or Newmarket practice begins with time to talk. This is an important part of the process.
We’ll explore:
- What’s been troubling you
- How the issue affects you day to day
- Any patterns you’ve noticed
- What you’d like to feel or experience differently
There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with. Sessions are always collaborative and at your pace.
We’ll be very thorough at the outset so that we can get you a good result.
2. Understanding How Hypnotherapy Works
Before any hypnosis takes place, I’ll explain:
- What hypnosis actually is (and what it isn’t)
- How hypnotherapy helps change patterns of thoughts and feelings
- How anxiety, habits, confidence or fears can develop and keep going
This helps remove uncertainty and allows you to relax into the process with confidence.

3. Entering Hypnosis — What It Feels Like
Hypnosis is a naturally relaxed, focused state. You are purposefully using your normal psychological processes such as your imagination and focus. Many people describe it as similar to:
- Daydreaming
- Being absorbed in a book or film
- That in-between feeling before sleep
You remain aware and in control throughout. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you can come out of hypnosis at any time.
Some people feel deeply relaxed; others simply feel calm and focused. Both experiences are completely normal.

4. The Therapeutic Hypnotherapy Work
Using hypnosis, we’ll work to prime your mind to:
- Reduce anxiety responses
- Calm the nervous system
- Change unhelpful automatic patterns
- Reinforce confidence, safety, and control
The techniques used will depend on your goals – whether that’s anxiety relief, habit change, confidence, or overcoming fears.
👉 This approach is often helpful for issues such as panic and overthinking.

5. Ending Hypnosis
You’ll be gently guided back to full awareness. Most people feel:
- Calm
- Clear-headed
- Relaxed
Some notice changes immediately; for others, shifts happen more gradually over the following days.
How Will You Feel After Your First Session?
Everyone’s experience is slightly different, but many people report:
- Feeling lighter or calmer
- Reduced intensity of anxious thoughts
- Improved sleep
- A sense of hope or clarity
Change doesn’t always feel dramatic, often it’s subtle and steady.
You can drive, go back to work or take part in anything else after your session.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
This varies depending on:
- The issue you’re working on
- How long it’s been present
- Your personal goals
Some people notice significant improvement within a small number of sessions, while others benefit from a short course of support.
We create positive momentum and then build. Gradually we can increase the time between sessions so that by the end of your hypnotherapy, you know that you have successfully achieved your goals.
We’ll discuss this together — there’s no pressure or obligation.
Common Questions About Hypnotherapy
“Will I lose control?”
No. You remain aware and in control throughout. Rather than being controlled, my job is to help you to take back control over your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours (and to be able to keep the positive results going into the future).
“Will I be unconscious?”
No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You are mentally focused, aware and engaged throughout.
“What if it doesn’t work for me?”
The vast majority of people I work with achieve positive results (just check out the reviews). We review progress at every session and can adjust our approach accordingly. Hypnotherapy is not something done to you so it also requires you to take guided action outside sessions to help you start feeling better sooner.
“How long is a hypnotherapy session?”
Sessions typically last about an hour, allowing time for discussion, induction, and therapeutic work.
Is Hypnotherapy Right for Anxiety, Confidence or Habits?
Using hypnosis we’ll work to reduce anxiety responses and calm the nervous system, whether your focus is on anxiety, panic, confidence or habits.
Hypnotherapy can be helpful for:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Overthinking and stress
- Confidence and self-esteem
- Habits and emotional eating
- Fears and phobias
