Calm Anxious Feelings

Hello, it’s Dan here, I hope you’re good.

Now, when someone comes to see me about anxiety in Ely or Newmarket, one of the things they often describe is a sort of tightness, a heaviness in their chest when they feel anxious. And what’s going on here is your breathing has got shallower and faster as your body takes in more oxygen and all the cycle of anxious feelings starts happening as your body gets ready to deal with whatever threat it perceives is coming your way. It’s like your body’s getting ready to exercise by taking in the oxygen yet you’ve got no plans to exercise. This is all the perception, all the thinking process, all the worst cases in your mind.

So controlled breathing is one of the most effective ways to manage anxious feelings because it works with how your body works, because when you feel relaxed, if you were to pay attention to your breathing, and who does that, your breathing would be deeper and breathing out of your belly. So we can start to do that deliberately to manage how we feel when we are out and about.

So here’s what you need to do and you really want to practice this. You breathe in for a slow inner count of four, You hold your breath for a count of two. And then you gently breathe out for a count of six.

So the key thing there is the out breath is longer. That stimulates the relaxation response. Everything biologically has to calm down a couple of notches. Obviously, though, you want to get in early. So I would just start doing it everyday anyway. Make it a habit. You ease things off as you go along but also you’re training yourself to be really good at it so that when you’re out and about, when things are going on, if you need to calm those anxious feelings, it’s second nature. You don’t have to think about it, you don’t have to go, “what was the breathing thing again?” It just happens because you’re doing it anyway.

It means you feel calm more of the time anyway because you’re managing your feelings, but it also means that should you need to do it because you can sense anxious feelings are starting to rise, you can get in there early, because the lower down you catch that feeling, the easier it is to manage.

What most people do with breathing techniques is wait until they’re really, really, really anxious. And it’s going to take a lot more time and effort and breathing to bring those feelings back down, but probably by that point you’re not thinking clearly. You just want to get out of that situation or avoid that thing, go somewhere where you feel safe. So you don’t even get the benefit.

So we want it so that you’ve practised it so much that you get in early. You calm those feelings. You manage how you feel. And so you find yourself feeling more calm, more relaxed, more confident, more in control. simply by managing your breathing effectively. Put it in place, let me know how you get on with it. In for four, hold for two, out for six and find yourself feeling more calm, more of the time.
