Is your mind always on the go? Do you find it impossible to switch off and just unwind?

It’s very common for people to tell me they can’t switch off their minds – they may distract themselves and stay busy but as soon as they pause (e.g. in the car or when trying to sleep at night), their mind goes into overdrive.

Of course, we are always thinking, so it's about learning to feel calmer and take control over those thoughts that gives us that freedom.

So here is a quick way to start getting freedom from thoughts:

  1. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. Don’t try to change it or do anything else, just pay attention to your breathing for a minute or two. Notice the sensations of your breathing and the gentle rise and fall with every breath. Observe your breathing as though you were watching someone else breathe.
  2. As you continue to pay attention to your breathing, start to notice the thoughts going through your mind. Notice deliberate thoughts and those that just float by. Don’t try to do anything with them yet, just notice them and notice the pace at which they happen.
  3. Now imagine a TV screen to the left or to the right in your mind. Send that entire stream of thought over and onto the TV screen so you can watch your thoughts over there. As you continue to notice your thoughts over there, start to tell yourself you are becoming lighter, calmer and more comfortable over here. Continue to observe and feel more and more relaxed.
  4. When you are ready, open your eyes and keep that feeling of being lighter, more relaxed and more comfortable.

Take the time to practice this and soon you'll be able to let unwanted thoughts drift away to allow you to feel calmer and more in control.

Best wishes
